1. Perspectives on spending for food

A passuk says that when Hashem will broaden Klal Yisroel’s boundaries, one may eat meat whenever he desires it. A Baraisa derives: למדה תורה דרך ארץ – the Torah here teaches proper behavior, שלא יאכל אדם בשר אלא לתאבון – that one should not eat meat, except for a genuine desire. One should not purchase meat at the market, because "מבקרך ומצאנך" – from your cattle and from your flock implies to only shecht one’s own livestock, and only “from” [some of] them. Based on this, Rebbe Elazar ben Azaryah said that one’s diet should be proportionate to his financial means: someone with one מנה should buy a ליטרא of vegetables for his pot, one with greater means should buy fish, or meat, and someone with a hundred מנה may have a pot cooked for him daily. [The others above should have their respective dishes on Friday nights.] Rav advises following this approach, but Rebbe Yochanan says that “Abba” (Rav) was from a healthy family and could subsist on simple foods, but for us, even one with just a פרוטה should spend it on [good] food. Rav Nachman adds that in his later generation, one should even borrow to purchase food.

2. Spending within one’s means on himself, beyond his means on his family

Rav Avira darshened the passuk: טוב איש חונן ומלוה יכלכל דבריו במשפט – good is the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice. “Conducting affairs with justice” means: לעולם יאכל אדם וישתה פחות ממה שיש לו – a person should always eat and drink less than what is within his means, וילבש ויתכסה במה שיש לו – and dress and cover himself according to his means (to maintain his dignity), ויכבד אשתו ובניו יותר ממה שיש לו – but he should honor his wife and children beyond his means, שהן תלויין בו – because they are dependent on him, והוא תלוי במי שאמר והיה העולם – and he is dependent on the One Who spoke and the world came into being.

3. Does הדם כסוי override Shabbos after shechting for a חולה?

Rav Eina taught that one who shechts (a חיה or bird) for a dangerously ill person on Shabbos must cover its blood. Rashi explains that since Shabbos was overridden for the shechitah, it is likewise overridden for all its accompanying mitzvos. Rabbah said: אשתומא קאמר – He is saying something astonishing! לישמטוה לאמוריה מיניה – They should remove his “speaker” (i.e., tongue)! Rabbah cited a Baraisa teaching that a כוי may not be shechted on Yom Tov, and if it was, its blood is not covered in violation of Yom Tov prohibitions, based on a kal vachomer: Regarding milah, שודאה דוחה שבת – whose definite obligation overrides Shabbos (i.e., a baby whose eighth day is definitely Shabbos), yet ספיקה – its uncertain obligation does not override Yom Tov (i.e., if Yom Tov is either his eighth or ninth day, he is not circumcised on Yom Tov). Therefore, כסוי הדם, whose definite obligation does not override Shabbos, certainly its ספק (i.e., a כוי) would not override Yom Tov! The “definite obligation” of כסוי which does not override Shabbos is the case of shechitah for a חולה, proving its blood is not covered, and refuting Rav Eina.
