1. The Gemara asks: וניבטלו ברובא

The Mishnah had taught that animals forbidden in benefit, or disqualified as korbanos, prohibit even a thousand animals into which they are mixed. The Gemara asks: וניבטלו ברובא – but let them become nullified by the majority of permitted animals! If you suggest חשיבי – that [animals] are considered significant, and so cannot be nullified by a majority מדרבנן, this may be a valid answer according to the opinion (presented below) that כל שדרכו לימנות – anything usually counted out and sold by number cannot be nullified in any mixture. But according to the opinion that את שדרכו לימנות – only [something] exclusively counted out and sold by number cannot be nullified, then animals, which are occasionally sold without being counted out, should be nullified in a majority!? The Gemara answers this question on the next Daf.

2. Rebbe Meir’s opinion: כל/את שדרכו לימנות is not בטל in a mixture

The Gemara presents the Mishnah whose text is the basis for the above machlokes: if one had חבילי תילתן – bundles of fenugreek which were כלאי הכרם – kilayim of the vineyard, they are prohibited in benefit and must be burned. If they became mixed with permitted bundles, Rebbe Meir says they are all burned, but the Chochomim say: יעלו באחד ומאתים – [the forbidden bundles] become nullified in a mixture ratio of one in two hundred and one [permitted bundles]. Rebbe Meir would express his opinion: כל שדרכו למנות מקדש – anything which is usually counted out and sold by number prohibits the entire mixture if a single item is כלאים. Amoraim debated the correct text of this statement. Rebbe Yochanan says: את שדרכו למנות שנינו – we were taught the Mishnah’s text that only [something] exclusively counted out and sold by number cannot be בטל, but items which are occasionally sold without being counted are בטל. Reish Lakish says: כל שדרכו למנות שנינו – we were taught the Mishnah’s text that anything usually counted out and sold by number cannot be בטל.

3. The Chochomim’s opinion: only six specific items are never בטל in a mixture

The Chochomim disagree with Rebbe Meir and say: אינו מקדש אלא ששה דברים בלבד – only six items prohibit an entire mixture and are never בטל, and Rebbe Akiva says seven items. The six items, which are large, valuable, and significant among their species, are: אגוזי פרך – Perech nuts, ורימוני באדן – Badan pomegranates, וחביות סתומות – sealed barrels of wine, וחילפי תרדין – beet stalks, וקילחי כרוב – cabbage stalks, ודלעת יונית – and a Greek gourd. Rebbe Akiva adds: ככרות של בעל הבית – homemade loaves of bread. The cases among this list which are subject to ערלה (i.e., fruit, namely: nuts, pomegranates, and wine) can prohibit a great mixture as ערלה, and those among this list which are subject to being כלאי הכרם (i.e., vegetables and grains, namely: beets, cabbage, gourds, and bread) can prohibit a great mixture as כלאי הכרם.
